Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held a high-level meeting with officials from India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry to address the illicit importation of dangerous opioids into Ghana.

The meeting, described as crucial and frank, focused on tackling a public health crisis that is devastating Ghana’s youth.

The Ghanaian delegation shared intelligence and provided evidence gathered under President John Mahama’s directive to confront the opioid menace head-on. Indian officials, led by Additional Secretary Ajay Bhadoo, pledged to take decisive action against pharmaceutical companies engaged in the illegal trade. Measures include revoking licenses and prosecuting those behind the illicit operations.

According to Mr Ablakwa, to ensure sustained efforts, Ghana’s High Commission in New Delhi has been tasked with closely monitoring the situation and maintaining regular contact with Indian authorities.

“I have tasked Ghana’s High Commission in New Delhi to maintain close contact with the relevant Indian government officials, keenly monitor the situation and provide regular updates,” the Foreign Affairs Minister indicated.

Minister Ablakwa commended India’s commitment to resolving the crisis, expressing gratitude for their cooperation.

“We are exceedingly grateful to President Mahama for his leadership and guidance. Ghana will win this war,” Ablakwa stated.
