The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has sided with defender Francis Adjetey in his dispute against Hearts of Oak and the Ghana Football Association over a breach of contract. The decision, dated February 26, 2025, overturns the Ghana Football Association’s Appeals Committee ruling from February 26, 2024, and underscores the importance of justice and fairness in football arbitration.
As a result of the ruling, Hearts of Oak have been ordered to pay Adjetey a substantial amount of GHC 106,477.42, with an interest of 5% per annum from September 15, 2023, until the date of full payment. This financial compensation is a clear illustration of the club’s accountability to meet its obligations and ensure that players receive what they deserve.
The CAS ruling also holds both Hearts of Oak and the Ghana Football Association jointly liable for paying CHF 1,000 in legal costs incurred by Adjetey. This aspect of the decision highlights the accountability of football associations and clubs in ensuring fairness in contractual disputes.
The outcome of this case sets a significant precedent for future disputes, emphasizing the value of arbitration in resolving sporting disputes in a just and impartial manner. Adjetey’s victory serves as a reminder to clubs and associations of the importance of upholding contractual agreements and respecting the rights of players.
The ruling is a major win for Adjetey, who had been seeking justice for the wrongful termination of his contract. With this decision, the CAS has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting fairness and justice in the world of football.
