President Akufo-Addo assures teachers of payment of all arrears

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured teachers that all arrears accrued between 2013 and 2016 will be settled by end of March this year.

The government has already begun clearing the arrears which is in the areas of travel allowance, transfer grants and overtime.

President Akufo-Addo made this known at the re inauguration of refurbished Bediako conference Hall of GNAT at its Headquarters in Accra. President Akufo Addo said government will make sure that the situation where teachers allowances are in arrears will not recure.

The imposing edifice which cost seven million Ghana cedis has a conference hall with one thousand one hundred sitting capacity, hostel, bar and restaurant.

The Confernce hall was named after Thomas Ango Bediako one of the pioneers of Ghana National Association of Teachers, GNAT.

The late TA Bediako was the brain child behind the establishment of Ghana Education Service playing an important role in the education reforms of 1974 which brought into being JSS.

The conference Hall of at the National Headquarters of GNAT was named after him in 1960 for his immense contribution toward teacher unionism and welfare.

The National President of GNAT, Philipa Larson, appealed to the President to settle allowance on arrears of Teachers.

President Akufo-Addo paid tribute to T. A. Bediako describing as a pioneer in education. He said government recognises the importance of Teachers and will pay attention to their welfare.

He said government will.pursue several reforms as part of government vision to transform the country’s education delivery system to meet the need of the 21 century. He appealed to teachers to embrace the reforms.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, said teacher welfare will continue to receive the attention of government.
