The Minority has been justifying why it boycotted the swearing in of the Ayawaso West Wuogon MP, Lydia Seyram Alhassan and subsequently referring to her as “Bloody Widow”.

Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme, “Focus”, Ranking Member on the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Inusah Fuseini, said the processes that led to the election of Madam Alhassan were bloody.

That is why the minority used those unsavoury terms.

Mr. Fuseini said the minority also boycotted her swearing in because the whole process was questionable.

Meanwhile, a member of the NPP Communication team, Gary Nimako, says the minority’s boycott was unfortunate.

He said the description of Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan as a ‘bloody widow’ shows how insensitive they are.

Mr. Nimako said the processes that led to her election have nothing to do with her status as a widow.

Background

Members of Parliament on the minority side on Tuesday, 5th February 2019 staged a walkout during the swearing-in of Lydia Alhassan, the newly elected Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.

Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, on the floor of parliament, asked permission to boycott the swearing-in in order to solidarize with the victims of the violence that occurred at the La Bawaleshie polling centre during the election.

The minority, however, displayed placards with the inscription “bloody widow”, which suggested that the minority was actually against the swearing- in of the newly elected Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Alhassan.
