Government says it welcomes the demonstration that hit the streets of the capital, Accra on Thursday, demanding some answers to issues regarding security in the country.
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said demonstrations are part of the constitutional right of citizens and that is why government, through the police service provided security for the demonstrators.
Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana Dr. Alidu Seidu said he did not agree with critics who said the opposition political parties who staged the demonstration should have waited for the Justice Emile Short’s commission of enquiry to finish its work before any such action.
The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia told the media that the demonstration is not against the Police but against the government for insecurity, following recent disturbances in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
For his part, the NDC flagbearer aspirant, Sylvester Mensah said if the police is not supported to curb insecurity, the NDC as a party will not retreat.
Earlier the group presented a petition to the Inspector General of Police David Asante Apeatu, The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery and other stakeholders.
The petition called for a peaceful resolution not only of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence but also endeavour to address the security issues in the country.
The IGP after receiving the petition said his office will give it the needed attention.
