Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has left Accra to the Central Mediterranean Sea Island of Malta, on a two day visit at the invitation of his counterpart Marie Louise Coleira Preca.
The historic visit which is aimed at deepening relations between the two countries, follows one by the Maltese leader in July 2017 at which both Presidents affirmed their resolve to strengthen the already good relations between their countries.
President Akufo-Addo’s visit will give impetus to the Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation agreed upon between both nations in 2013, and shore up prospects for enhanced cooperation with Malta, which has one of the fastest growing financial, maritime, aviation and manufacturing sectors.
Whilst in Malta, President Akufo-Addo, will hold talks with Maltese President and his Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Muscat as well as the Opposition leader, Adrian Delia, and the Speaker of Parliament, Anglu Farrugia.
President Akufo-Addo will also witness the signing of about six agreements on Medicines, Bilateral Air Services, Avoidance of Double taxation, Fisheries Cooperation, tourism and the waiver of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and service passports.
He will also address a business forum of Maltese and Ghanaian entrepreneurs. Ghana and Malta, which are members of the Commonwealth Group of Nations (CHOGM), have firm ties at both the bilateral and multilateral levels since the relocation of Ghana’s Mission in Tripoli, Libya to Malta in 2014, following the political crisis in that North African state.
