The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on government to adopt the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund, (IMF), in order to save Ghana’s economy.
This according to the NDC, is because Ghana exited the IMF programme without achieving its objective of restoring debt sustainability and microeconomic stability.
Speaking at the NDC public lecture on Ghana’s economy, in reaction to the Town Hall meeting held in Accra, by the Government Economic Management Team, (EMT), Member of Parliament, (MP), for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo said the National Patriotic Party, (NPP), has failed to manage Ghana’s economy because they have focused on borrowing.
Mr. Adongo urged the government to implement the IMF’s recommendations.
According to Vice President, Dr. Mohamadu Bawumia, Ghana officially exited the IMF programme, on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.
The Coalition for Restoration, a group under the NDC organised the Town Hall Meeting, barely 24 hours after the Vice President Dr. Bawumia addressed the public in a town hall meeting.
Several speakers which included former Ministers and MPs’ of the current Parliament spoke on various sectors of the economy.
Mr. Isaac Adongo compared the country’s finances under current government and the past and concluded that the NDC performed better.
The former Deputy Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson, accused Dr. Bawumia of falsifying facts and figures, insisting that any time Dr. Bawumia makes a speech on the economy, the local currency depreciates.
He insisted that the only viable way to save the cedi is for President Akufo-Addo to gag Dr. Bawumia.
“I will urge the President to restrain his Vice President because anytime he speaks the currency moves. You heard him talk about the likes of the judiciary and the court systems. What has that got to do with the economic management team? He had nothing to say. He was just playing with numbers. And again, you know him and his credentials of lying with numbers. You could see lies,” he said.
Other speakers on the day were Former Education Ministers Professor, Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, MP for Ketu South, Fiifi Kwetey and Former Deputy Finance Minister, Mona Quartey.
A Former President and leader of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama was the special guest of honour.
