The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has bemoaned the lack of patriotism and volunteerism among the citizenry, especially the youth.
At a day’s social auditing engagement by the NCCE with people at Sanga in the South Dayi District of the Volta Region, the District Director of NCCE, Mr Setriakor Gagakuma said it was sad to see the youth unconcerned about such meetings for the development of their localities.
The NCCE’s social auditing engagement is to promote community ownership of developmental projects and policies and empowering citizens to demand accountability from duty bearers among others.

The Director noted that often, it was the elderly and pensioners who attended such meetings and described it as unfortunate for the youth who were the future leaders.
Mr Gagakuma said another worrying issue was that though the social audit programme was to benefit the people, NCCE virtually had to ‘beg’ them to attend and called for a change in attitude.
He called on the government to resource the Commission to conscientise the citizenry on their civic responsibilities.
Mr Gagakuma said that would ensure that the people participated fully in the governance process for rapid socioeconomic development.
