From Bolgatanga, Radio Ghana’s Samuel Ayammah, reports that, hundreds of orthodox Muslims and sympathizers converged on NAFAC grounds to offer prayers as part of activities to commemorate the Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
The day is in remembrance of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his only son Ishmael, a moment the Muslim world deem as an act of submission to Allah’s command.
On Eid, Muslims are enjoined to reflect on the significance of the sacrifice with feast and merry making to represent represents the ram that Abraham sacrificed in place of his son. Eid-ul-Adha is therefore a unique occasion in every way.
Besides its highly spiritual and moral characteristics, it has matchless qualities. Each Eid festival is a wholesome celebration of a remarkable achievement of the individual Muslim in the service of Allah. Unlike the Eid-ul-Fitr, which comes after one month of absolute fasting in the month of Ramadan, Eid-ul-Adha marks the completion of the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, Hajj, a course in which Muslims handsomely demonstrate their renouncement of mundane concerns and hearkens to the eternal voice of Allah.
In a message, the outgoing Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari urged the Muslim community to demonstrate Islamic teachings of brotherliness and tolerance even to non- Muslim members.
He said the Zongo Development Fund has come to the rescue of communities where social amenities and infrastructure were nothing to write home about. Mr. Bukari said after assessing the priority needs of Zongo communities and planning with Muslims on the use of the money, actual implementation of the various projects will commence soon. He charged Muslim leaders to give their full support for the smooth take off of development.
The outgoing Regional minister said government will continue to recognize religious bodies as partners in development. He said President Nana-Addo led administration is committed in creating an enabling environment to nurture this partnership to grow so that they are able to play their respective roles effectively for national development. In a sermon, the Deputy Regional Chief Imam, Sheik Tahiru Sa-eed, admonished Muslims to chart a common path by emulating the shining examples of the Holy Prophet.
He urged Muslims to follow the teachings of Prophet Muhammad in their day-to-day activities with a view to attaining paradise. He called on Muslims to continue to pray for leaders saying that is the only way the country can progress and come out of hardship. A ram was later slaughtered to exemplify the act of sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim. Other Muslim sects in the region including the Tijania’s observed the day at separate venues.
