The entire facility of the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre is to undergo redevelopment to meet international standards.
The modernisation will include the construction of other structures such as banks, malls, hotels and technology hubs to make the facility a one stop trading centre for both local and international marketers and exhibitors.
The sod cutting event for the redevelopment has been postponed due to some delay by stakeholders. This was made known in an interview with the Public Relations and Head of Exhibitions of the Ghana Trade Fair Centre, Oscar Asamoah Baffour
The Ghana International Trade Fair Centre was constructed in 1960 by Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as part of the government’s massive industrialization campaign after independence. It served as the primary trade hub for inter-African trade.
The first International Trade Fair took place in 1967 to promote inter Africa trade and attract foreign investors. Seventeen foreign countries participated and seven African nations attended.
The Trade Fair Secretariat was later set up under the Ministry of Trade in 1965. For five decades now, the centre has held a number of exhibitions worth its salt. For now, the trade fair is to undergo a total redevelopment to meet international standards to promote exhibitions.
According to the Public Relations Officer and Head of Exhibitions of the centre, Oscar Asamoah Baffour, the renovation will create more accommodation and other facilities to make it possible to host exhibitors locally and internationally.
Mr. Baffour said the reconstruction will make it more attractive and affordable to traders to exhibit at the centre.
