The Ghanaian Times salutes all workers for committing their lives to nation building and serving their motherland selflessly as May Day was marked. The Times hopes discussion between the TUC and SSNIT over workers’ pension benefits on the issue would yield the desired result. The paper calls on workers to take interest in the issues, while in active service and appeals to government to support workers to ensure job satisfaction.
The Daily Graphic adds its voice to calls by Organized Labour for the review of the country’s labour laws. According to the paper, employers especially those in the private sector often take advantage of loopholes in the laws to exploit workers. The Graphic is of the view that allowing some employers to use the lapses to cheat workers may seem right, but in the long run it will militate against the rapid and sustained development of the country.
The Daily Heritage calls for the May Day celebration format to be changed. The paper says instead of the usual parade where politicians make congratulatory speeches, May Day should be a day where both workers and their employers will take stock of the year’s performance, and accept judgement as to whether their demands should be met or not. This, the Daily Heritage believes is the right way to appreciate workers.
