Black stars and Newcastle midfielder Christian Atsu has donated five thousand pounds to support the ex-convict reintegration project of the Crime Check Foundation.
This is to ensure that those released from the prisons are properly reintegrated into society.
Speaking at the launch of the ex-convict reintegration project in Accra, Mr Atsu, appealed to Parliament to pass the Non-Custodial Sentencing Bill into law.
He reiterated that instead of sending those who commit petty crimes to prison to be fed with taxpayers money, the offenders should be made to serve the communities.
Christiain Atsu who was the special guest speaker is the largest donor to the Crime Check Foundation.
He has been advocating non-custodial sentencing regime for petty offenders to undertake community service.
He called for public support for the ex-convicts reintegration project for the nation to tap their skills and knowledge for socio-economic development.
Mr Atsu urged Parliament to pass the Non-custodial Bill to promote community service.
Crime Check Foundation (CCF) is a prisons NGO which has been throwing the spotlight on prisoners who have become victims of questionable justice delivery.
The Executive Director of the foundation, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng said the prison can be anybody’s potential second home because of the flawed nature of the criminal justice system.
He expressed concern about how ex-convicts find it difficult to get jobs because of the prison tag that hangs around their necks.
Mr. Kwarteng also noted that people easily forget that not all prisoners may have committed a crime for which they do time in prison. The ex-convict reintegration project needs the support of all.
