Queen mothers in the Kusaug Traditional Area in Bawku have called on Ghanaians to continue to help in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation, teenage pregnancy and early marriage to save the people from these social vices.
They said this at a durbar aimed at tackling domestic violence and abuse of women and children.
Speakers at the durbar warned that perpetrators of these social vices will be prosecuted if they do not desist from these practices.
The Bawku Municipality and the Kusaug Traditional Area, which is closer to the neighbouring countries including Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Niger is noted for the phenomenon where many of the perpetrators of FGM, often smuggle young girls across the border towns to perform such heinous acts.
Others also perform the act in the hideouts in the communities particularly in the remote parts of the Kusaug Traditional Area.
Other emerging issues that need urgent attention are teenage pregnancy, early marriage and domestic violence. Touching on the issues of teenage pregnancy, the Bawku Municipal Girl Child Education Officer, Matilda Abolga, expressed worry about the high rate of teenage pregnancy recorded over the last three years .
The Paramount Queen Mother of the Bawku Traditional Area, Poanaba Alasbuudi, bemoaned the high level of domestic violence and urged her divisional and sub-divisional Queen Mothers to fight against teenage pregnancy, FGM and the abuse of women and children in the community.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Paulina Patience Abayage, called on the Queen Mothers to contribute their quota towards safeguarding the peace the people in Bawku are currently enjoying.
The event which was on the theme, “the Role of Women in the Kusaug Traditional Area in Development”, brought together all the queen mothers, chiefs and other dignitaries.
