Vice President Bawumia adjudged Digital Leader of the Year

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been adjudged the Digital Leader of the Year at the 9th Ghana Information Technology and Telecom Awards for championing the digital transformation of the economy.
While commending industry players for their enormous contribution to the development of the economy, Dr Bawumia announced that Ghana will by the end of the year have a Universal QR code to accept the different cashless payment systems.
The code he indicated will save merchants from displaying several point of sale devices to receive payments.
The Ghana Information Technology and Telecom Awards (GITTA) is held annually to reward and recognize not only the products and diverse innovations that keep the ICT and Telecom sector thriving, but also the companies and people who make the industry excel.
The award conferred on the Vice President comes on the back of his efforts to leverage on technology to improve service delivery in the public sector.
Vice President Bawumia said the benefits of a digitised economy cannot be underrated, as it has the potential to move the country beyond aid.

Highlighting some innovations, such as the digital address system, the Paperless ports and the drone delivery service and E-procurement, Vice President Bawumia also announced that by the end of the year, the Universal QR code will be introduced to make electronic payments less cumbersome.

Vice President Bawumia also pointed out that the  government’s vision to make Wi-Fi free in Secondary and Tertiary levels is on course. He appealed to the telcos to come on board to make this a reality.

The 9th Ghana Information Technology and Telecom Awards saw some government institutions who have embraced digitisation for effective delivery in the public sector being honoured.
The Driver Vehicle and Licencing Authority, DVLA took three awards in recognition of reforms at the Authority, which highlights the application of people, process and Technology.
DVLA Chief Executive Officer, Kwasi Agyeman Busia also received the Public Sector CEO of the Year Award.
The Ghana Police Service also received the Best Government Use of Social Media Award.
