A follow-up session of former Chief Justice, Mrs. Justice Georgina Wood’s Mentorship training Programme, organized for female head porters, also known as ‘Kayayei’ has taken place in Accra.
It was aimed at educating the female head porters on their rights against child marriage and to build up their confidence to acquire a profession for a brighter future.
The event was facilitated by the Purim African Youth Development Platform, PAYDP, and supported by the UNFPA to provide integrated Legal Literacy, Livelihood Skills Training and Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for some female porters, known as “Kayayei” from Techiman, Accra and Kumasi.
The Executive Director of PAYDP, Aku Xornam Kevi, said the follow-up session was held to track the progress of the project and assess the female porters on how they have performed after the engagements.
Some selected female porters shared their success stories after they have moved on with their fellow porters and organizers of the programme. Out of the four who spoke, one is currently furthering her education at the University of Education, Winneba, the second is awaiting her WASSCE results and the other two, supporting their lives with the livelihood skills that they were trained on.
The two-day event ends today, July 5 and the beneficiaries will be taken through mentorship in other areas such as journalism, psychology, fashion designing and nursing.
The Justice Georgina Wood Mentorship Programme was initiated in 2007 to expose students to the structure of the court system and boost their interest in the legal profession.
