A solemn but brief wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the passing of former President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills has been held at the Asomdwee Park, at Osu in Accra.
The qualities, principles and what the late President stood for run throughout the ceremony.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills died on the afternoon July 24, 2012 after suffering a severe stroke.
The news of his passing was officially announced in a three-sentenced statement issued by his Chief of Staff John Henry Martey Newman.
The whole nation was thrown into a one month of state mourning.
Seven years on, the late President is still remembered for his calm demeanour, love for peace and development which earned his the accolade “Asomdwee hen” meaning the King of Peace. Very Rev. Isaac Atuah-Jackson of the Methodist Church, Ghana asked Ghanaians to emulate the exemplary leadership of Professor Atta Mills.
Former President John Mahama in a speech read for him by the National Chairman of the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, recounted his cordial relationship with the late President and how he gave him the opportunity to serve as his running mate and Vice President.
He took a swipe at the Akufo-Addo administration accusing it of perpetuating a culture of silence.
Chairman Ofosu Ampofo, the General Secretary of the NDC, Jonson Asiedu Nketsia laid wreath on behalf of former President Mahama and the people of Ghana, and the NDC while Samuel Atta Mills and MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo Abirem laid one for the late President’s family.
Two other wreaths were also laid.
