Minister for Special Initiative, Mavis Koomson, has assured members of the Association of Building and Civil Contractors of Ghana (ABCECG) of government’s commitment to partner them to promote competitiveness and profitability of the construction industry.
Madam Koomson gave the assurance at the opening of the 10th Annual Conference of the Association at Winneba in the Central region.
She said the construction industry is an important element of the Ghanaian economy saying the industry’s contribution to GDP increased to GH¢3,175,000 in 2017 as compared to 3,000,036 in 2016.
Madam Koomson noted that Ghana as a developing country has great needs for all types of construction such as highways, roads, hospitals, power plants, dams, housing, maintenance on existing infrastructure, among others.
It is in this regard that President Akufo-Addo established the Ministry of Special Initiatives and allocated one million dollars to each constituency for infrastructure and poverty eradication programme.
Currently, 1,000 small water systems, 1,000 institutional toilets, 50 warehouses and 570 small dams and dugouts are being constructed in all constituencies nationwide.
According to Madam Koomson, the establishment of the Construction Industry Development Authority (CIDA), will ensure that the industry is sanitised to ensure compliance regarding regulations, standards and codes to guide best practices and procedures in the industry.
