Ace Sports Journalist, Dr. Kweku Ofosu Asare has criticised the Ministry of Youth and Sports’ (MOYS) approach in recruiting sports journalists to cover international events in the name of the Black Stars.
His criticism comes on the heels of the Ministry’s budget expenditure that captured journalists as part of the people to have benefited from the outrageous budget at the just ended AFCON in Egypt.
The Black Stars crushed out of the competition at the round of 16, however, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah’s budget report in Parliament revealed a region of 4.564,352,00 million dollars to have been expended on the Black Stars outing at the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.
This has generated a huge public outrage hence, the suggestion by the host of “Inquest” on GTV Sports Plus, Dr. Kweku Ofosu Asare that, it is imperative for government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to draw out a clear policy to cater for sports journalists who will cover international sporting event in future.
”’If the ministry wants to send journalist to events it will be proper to write to the various media houses for the media houses to select reporters other than the ministry or government selecting reporters of theirs, so as not to influence their reportage”’.
Sports journalist have been caught in the middle of recent unscrupulous activities such as the 2018 Australia visa scandal and the spending of tax payer’s money on reporters at the AFCON 2019.
The veteran broadcaster and lecturer has however advised the current generation of sports journalists to eschew conducts that compromise on the ethics of the job and uphold integrity and moral standards of the trade.
””I never went to the ministry nor the government during my time to seek for sponsorhip. I went around to look for my own sponsorship from Corporate entities and so it was always going to be difficult for anybody to dictate as to how i do my job””
He spoke on the ‘Game Show’ on GBC’s Uniiq FM.
