About two million hectares of land has been earmarked for the planting of more than one hundred million tree seedlings in three years.

Out of this number, 150,000 tree seedlings will be planted in some selected communities in the Greater Accra, Central, Bono and Eastern Regions this week.

The initiative by the Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa, AGRA, is a prelude to the African Green Revolution Forum to be held in Accra from the 3rd to the 6th of next month.

At a commemorative tree planting exercise near the Weija water works in Accra, the Head of Input Distribution and Agro Dealer Development at AGRA, Victor Antwi said the tree planting exercise is a call to action to minimise the impact of climate change.

He stressed the need to protect the rivers and reclaim deforested and encroached lands.

The tree planting exercise which is being carried out in partnership with the Forestry Commission and other stakeholders is to among other things tackle climate change and protect water sources.

Trees planted near agricultural land, offers many environmental benefits such as reducing erosion, increasing soil fertility and lowering water tables.

The exercise has so far covered Akroso- Akyem Oda, communities along the Weija Water works, and Winneba. Other communities scheduled for the exercise include Atebubu-Amanten and Pru, Techiman Nkoranza and Asutuare-Shai.  Victor Antwi of AGRA gives more insight on the initiative.
