Ghana grabbed her second gold medal in the ongoing African Games when the men’s 4x100m relay team beat Nigeria to pick the ultimate prize yesterday.

It was a repeat of the feat chalked up at the 2003 Games in Abuja where Ghana’s sprints quartet beat their Nigerian counterparts to win gold.

Yesterday the sprints quartet of Sean Safo-Antwi, Benjamin Azamati, Martin Owusu Antwi and Joseph Paul Amoah completed the race in a time of 38.30 seconds with Nigeria (38.59sec) and South Africa (38.80sec) picking the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Their win atoned for a disappointment by Ghana’s female sprints quartet who fluffed their baton-changing in the final at a time Ghana was in the good position to pick a medal.

Early in the day, Grace Obuor had also added to the country’s medal haul after she won bronze medal in the women’s 400 metres race.

She completed the race with a time of 51.86 seconds just behind Botswana’s Moroko Galefele who won gold in a time of 51.30 seconds and Favour Ofili Chukwuka of Nigeria who won silver (51.68 seconds).

Before reaching the final, the young athlete qualified with a time of 52.53 seconds in the semifinal and improved her time in the final to win bronze.

Weightlifters

There were four additional medals won by weightlifters Forester Osei and Christian Amoah.

Osei won silver in the 89kg Clean and Jerk event, while Amoah claimed three bronze medals in Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total.

In all, weightligting fetched Ghana eight medals at the games.
