Ghana’s Black Queens yesterday beat Gabon 3-0 away in Libreville, in the first leg of their second round qualifying match for the 2020 Olympic Games.
A goal in the first half and two more in the second half, handed the Queens the huge advantage ahead of the second leg which they host on Tuesday.
Goals from striker, Elizabeth Owusuaa (44th), and attacking midfielders, Portia Boakye (61st) and Priscilla Okyere (86th), secured the convincing win for the Queens who went to Gabon with the hope of a good result.
‘Our strategy worked’
Coach Mercy Tagoe-Quarcoo told the Daily Graphic in a telephone chat moments after the victory that they were happy with the result as the strategy to get a good result had worked according to plan.
“Our plan was to play cautious and not open up too much, but exploiting the chances we created and I think the team did well.
“However, we are not taking anything for granted as there is a second leg to be played. We return home on Thursday and plunge straight into preparations for the second leg which will be played on Tuesday,” she indicated.
The winners of this first round tie will play against the winners of the Kenya versus Malawi game which was also played yesterday.
Malawi, who hosted the first leg, won 3-2.
Seven other matches were played across the continent yesterday as part of the schedule by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the qualifiers for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
