Work on the Tema-Mpakadan Railway project is progressing steadily with the first 1.2km of railway line laid at Doryumu in the Greater Accra Region.

Levelling of 35 km of the ground from Tema to Doryumu has also been completed and awaiting the laying of tracks.

Joe Ghartey

That’s according to the  Minister for Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, when he paid a working visit to Mpakadan last week.

Mr. Ghartey said government is set to construct a 400 meter rail, across the Volta Lake at Akosombo from Senchi to Mpakadan in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

The Railway line according to the Minister is part of the Tema to Mpakadan project.

Mr. Ghartey said government has released $48 million to expand the line beyond Akosombo, and this is expected to be completed by June 2020.

The Railway Development Minister pointed out that ” the location of the one-kilometer long railhead would save the Akosombo hydro dam from possible damage caused by dynamite explosions as part of the construction process’’.

This he said forms part of the Ghana/ Burkina joint rail line project which when completed would serve as a port to enhance transportation on the Volta Lake.

The project which is being undertaken by an India firm, Afcons Infrastructure Limited, will also construct another port at Buepe in the Central Gonja District of the Northern Region.
