THE DAILY GRAPHIC is worried that one of the main challenges that faced the SSNIT students loan scheme,default in repayment,is once again threatening the sustainability and smooth running of the Students Loans and Trust Fund. The paper says everything must be done to get beneficiaries to service the loans so others who are coming into the system can also get the opportunity to be cushioned financially to reduce the burden on them as they go through their tertiary education. The paper believes that employed graduates would genuinely pay and therefore initiatives meant to create employment for the teeming graduates must be supported. The Graphic however entreats management of the fund to employ innovative measures to retrieve the money in debt.
THE GHANAIAN TIMES shares in the view of the Senior Minister Yaw Osafo Marfo on the large amounts of money expended on the importation of rice. These monies he suggested could be used to import machinery and medications to produce the crop locally. The Times finds it baffling that though the volumes of consumption of rice increases annually no effort has been made to increase domestic production. The paper says the country has the potential to produce rice in every part of the country and is capable of producing yields that could feed the nation. It finds the current trend unhelpful for the country’s economy and therefore time for the country to implement policies that would encourage domestic production and consumption of local rice.
