The Upper West Regional Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Patience Sally Kumah says public accountability is crucial to national development.
She said in order to ensure public accountability, all office bearers must execute their duties with diligence and transparency.
Madam Kumah stated that corruption is a major developmental issue in the country urging Ghanaians to be patriotic in everything they do.
She was speaking at a symposium at Wa Polytechnic on the theme: “An Expose to Legal Regimes on Anti-Corruption and the Role of the Tertiary Student in the Fight against Corruption”.
Madam Patience Sally Kumah said the symposium was to sensitise the students on anti-corruption regimes and legal framework that they can use to eliminate corruption in the country.
She said students are the potential office bearers and the need for the Commission to inculcate the habit of patriotism in them.
Madam Kumah stated that office bearers do not only refer to political appointees but anybody who holds public office.
She advised students to uphold the rule of law in the fight against corruption.
Deputy Chief Investigator from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, Sebastian Ziem in a presentation urged Ghanaians not to condone corrupt practices at their workplaces.
Mr. Ziem said public offices are not private enterprises and officials must not use it for their personal gains.
The Dean of Students, Wa Polytechnic, Aliata Mumuni noted that unemployment is one of the leading causes of corruption and appealed to government to address the issue in order to reduce the menace.
The event was organised by NCCE with funding from Star Ghana, Spanish Public Foundation, ARAP and in collaboration with some institutions to reduce corruption in Ghana and improve accountability.
