Teachers from Ghana, Uganda, Kenya receive first AU Continental Teacher Prize

African Union (AU) on Wednesday 23 October 2019, hosted inaugural award ceremony for the first continental teacher prize in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – to honor teachers for their immense performance.

The teacher prize is to celebrate and encourage teachers and enhance visibility and status of teachers in Africa.

Prizes of $10 000 and certificates each were awarded to top African teachers at the secondary school level.

Augusta Lartey-Young, from Presbyterian Boy’s Secondary School in Ghana; Erick Ademba from Asumbi Girls School in Kenya and Gladyce Kachope from a school in Uganda were the beneficiaries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Beatrice Njenga, Head of AU Education Division, noted that the Teacher Prize is an important and valuable instrument that contributes to the success of Agenda 2063 and continental Education strategy for Africa (CESA).

She said the Continental Teacher Awards is a key instrument to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Africa. She said the Awards is to enhance visibility and status of the teacher in Africa at all levels from early childhood to tertiary levels including TVET, and promote teaching as a first choice profession.

Speaking to reporters Madam Augusta Lartey-Young,  said the prize she won is an outcome of team work and that there are others who have contributed to the achievement. She therefore dedicates the award to them and urge them to continue to work hard.

Erick Ademba, on his part, said that the award promotes the image of teaching on the African continent, while motivating the African teacher to be innovative.
