The Government of Botswana has unveiled a series of new social welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing the well-being of its citizens, with implementation set for 2025.
Among the key measures announced are a monthly stipend for newborns, free sanitary pads for female students, and an increase in the Old Age Pension, commonly known as the Tandabala Allowance.
The announcement was made by Botswana’s Vice President and Minister of Finance, Ndaba N. Gaolathe, during the presentation of the 2025/2026 budget speech at Parliament Buildings on Monday, February 10.
Allowance for Newborn Babies
To support families, the government plans to introduce a monthly payment of 300 Pula for newborns until they reach one year of age.
“We are also proposing a targeted monthly allowance of P300.00 for newborn babies until they turn one year old,” Gaolathe stated.
However, the exact start date for this program has not yet been disclosed.
Free Sanitary Pads for Female Students
In an effort to improve menstrual health and dignity among schoolgirls, the government will provide free sanitary pads to female students.
“Additionally, we will be proposing the provision of free sanitary pads to female students, ensuring that dignity and essential needs are upheld across different segments of our population,” Gaolathe announced.
Increase in Old Age Pension (Tandabala Allowance)
Senior citizens will benefit from an increase in the Tandabala Allowance, which will rise from 830 Pula to 1,300 Pula, effective April 2025.
Gaolathe reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the elderly despite financial constraints.
“Mr. Speaker, the true measure of a society lies in how it cares for its most vulnerable members, reflecting its collective humanity and sense of justice. While fiscal constraints limit substantial increases in social welfare programmes, we remain resolutely committed to inclusiveness and the well-being of our citizens. With this in mind, we propose an increase of the Old Age Pension (Tandabala Allowance) from P830.00 to P1,300.00 effective 1st April 2025,” he stated.
The Vice President assured citizens that as the economy strengthens, the government will continue reviewing social welfare programs to maximize their impact on those in need.
