ECOWAS has appointed former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou as a mediator for the political crisis in Mahamadou Issoufou and former United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa, Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas as the mediator for Guinea.
They have been tasked to negotiate with the military authorities in Burkina Faso and Guinea and come out with a timetable to usher these countries onto the path of constitutional order in the next ordinary session of ECOWAS next month.
However, a communique issued by the regional bloc after the 6th extraordinary heads of state summit in Accra indicate that the humanitarian situations in Mali and Burkina Faso are very dire due to droughts and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
