Togo’s Electoral Commission has announced that Legislative and Local Elections will be held in December as well as a Referendum on Constitutional Reforms.
Since September last year, hundreds of thousands of people in that country have staged demonstrations calling for the resignation of President Faure Gnassingbe, who took power in 2005 after the death of his father who had ruled for 38 years.
The National Election Commission Chief Kodjona Kadanga, said the local elections and the referendum will be held on December 16, without specifying what reforms were envisaged.
He said Legislative elections will be held on December 20. Mr Kadanga, said the NEC is technically prepared and that logistics will be available.
The opposition is demanding a return to the 1992 constitution which included a two-term limit for Presidents.
This means Faure Gnassingbe, can not be a candidate in the next poll in 2020.
