Nigerian singer Ayra Starr has set a new milestone at the 2025 MOBO Awards, becoming the first woman in 16 years to win Best African Act.
The event, which celebrated excellence in Black music and culture, took place at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
The music Superstar, signed to Mavin Records, secured two major wins on the night.
She claimed Best International Act, edging out global stars Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Megan Thee Stallion, Tems, Asake, and Tyla.
She also beat Asake, Rema, Tems, Burna Boy, and Tyla to take home Best African Act.
Elsewhere, British rapper Central Cee made MOBO history by becoming the first artist to be named best male act three times.
British-Nigerian singer Darkoo took home Best Female Act, prevailing over RAYE, Jorja Smith, Little Simz, Cleo Sol, and Nia Archives.
Who is Ayra Starr?

Born Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe in Benin City, Nigeria, Ayra Starr first gained attention through her music covers on social media. She was signed to Mavin Records, led by Don Jazzy, in 2020 and rose to fame with her self-titled debut EP.
Her 2021 hit single “Bloody Samaritan” and debut album “19 & Dangerous” cemented her as one of Afrobeats’ rising stars.
Known for her unique blend of Afropop and R&B, Starr has gained international recognition, collaborating with global artists and performing on major stages worldwide.
Established in 1996, the MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Awards is one of the UK’s most prestigious platforms celebrating Black music and culture.
