Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician, Celestine Donkor, is advocating for the creation of a dedicated local awards scheme to properly recognise and celebrate the achievements of Ghanaian gospel artistes.
The gifted gospel minister emphasised that such recognition is crucial for the industry’s continued progress.
In an interview on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Wednesday, January 9, 2024, Celestine stressed that the gospel music industry in Ghana has experienced significant growth.
Highlighting the rising global influence of Ghanaian gospel music, she stated, “The industry has really grown. We have artists who are doing very well, with their own concepts, and they’re doing well not just in Ghana but beyond.”
Touching on exposure, she argued that lack of local recognition platforms has significantly hindered the progress of many gospel artists. “I’ve been in the industry for a long time, but it took me a long time to achieve what I have today. It’s because of the lack of platforms that would give us exposure.”
“These schemes are very important. They come to project the artist, and it’s time we begin to look into that,” she stated.
With the consistent growth of the gospel music scene in Ghana, Celestine’s call for a local awards scheme is a timely and important one. As the industry continues to nurture talented artists, platforms that properly recognise and celebrate their achievements are crucial for their continued success and the sector’s overall development.
