Afrobeat singer David Appiah-Kubi, better known by his stage name Kweku Afro, has emphasised that having exceptional music alone as a talented artiste may not be sufficient to secure the attention of record label.
According to him, it has become a numbers game to belong to a record label as an artiste.
“Record labels are now scrutinising an artiste’s metrics, evaluating if they possess the necessary elements for a mutually beneficial partnership,” he noted.
In an interview on the GTV Breakfast Show, he stressed that artistes should establish themselves and attain a certain level of recognition before expecting label interest and must be proactive in demonstrating their potential value to labels.
“Artistes should possess the qualities that would make them an attractive prospect for a record label because labels are less inclined to invest time in grooming artists and are instead seeking those who have already demonstrated their potential,” he explained.
The musician shared personal experiences of being assessed based on his market presence, comparing him to established artists, and determining if he possessed the qualities that would make him an attractive prospect for a record label.
