A fun club to project Ghanaian highlife music across the world has been formed. The club was initiated to support Uniiq FM’s flagship music program ‘Highlife is alive’, which is aimed at projecting the Ghanaian genre amidst the numerous music categories in this new era.
A former Director General of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (GBC), George Aryee, mentioned that highlife music could be used as a developmental tool to transform the mindset of the people of the country due to its good lyrics.
The Acting Director of Radio at GBC, Yaw Agyapong called on Ghanaians and academic bodies to consult GBC’s library for more on highlife music.
He added that GBC has the largest library of music in West Africa and that its doors are opened to give assistance to any search with regards to highlife music.
The host of the program, Richmond Oppong Amponsah known on radio as ‘Papa Wasty’ highlighted the purpose of the fan club. He said each time one listens to a highlife music, it comes with receiving an advice for free.
The event brought together some fans of highlife music and listeners of the programme which include traditional leaders, musicians and public servants. It took place at the GBC ZOY Gardens in Accra.
The legendary highlife musician, Bessa Simons took us back to the days of old with some of his music. He said the step is in the right direction and that the highlife music awards which has began will propagate is a good avenue to promote the agenda.
Highlife music originated in Ghana in the late 19th century and uses the melodic and main rhythmic structures of traditional Akan music.
The music program, ‘Highlife is Alive’ has been aired on GBC’s Uniiq Fm for close to eight years now.
It focuses on creating space for Ghanaian highlife music on the airwaves in the wake of the the diverse rising genres and media stations with different agendas.
An interim executive body was formed to set the club on its road.
Fans of highlife music and some highlife musicians showed up for the occasion. They include; Kumi Guitar and Nana Boakye Ofori Atta known as Pozo Hayes.
