Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has reaffirmed his dedication to revitalising tourist sites in the Volta Region to stimulate the local economy and generate employment opportunities for the youth.
Gunu emphasised the region’s significant tourism potential and the necessity for strategic collaboration to unlock its economic advantages.
During an interview on Channel One TV, he highlighted tourism’s critical role in providing employment for the region’s youth and reducing rural-to-urban migration. He stated, “I’m going to collaborate more with them to develop the tourist sites so that we can rake in a lot of revenue, improve the local economy of the region, create job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth so that they won’t be travelling or migrating to the capital searching for non-existing jobs. That is what we are going to do.”
Gunu assured residents of the government’s commitment to making the region a premier tourist destination in Ghana.
The Volta Region is home to several attractions, including the Wli Waterfalls, the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, and Mount Afadjato. However, these sites have been challenged by poor infrastructure and insufficient investment, which has limited their ability to attract tourists.
To address this, James Gunu also pledged to collaborate with the Ministers for Roads and Highways and Creative Arts to ensure that tourism in the region reaches its full potential. He acknowledged that many tourist sites need to be accessible and that he would work with the two ministers to enhance the tourism potential of the Volta Region.
Gunu has vowed to address the lack of motorable roads to many of these tourist sites to revitalise the region’s tourism sector. He also intends to address limited publicity and a lack of interest from local residents, which hinder the unlocking of some lesser-known attractions in the region.
