Renowned South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has died at the age of 51 after a short illness, her family announced. The Afropop singer, known for her powerful voice and versatile performances, passed away on Tuesday while being rushed to the hospital.
Khumalo’s sister, Tshepi Akeepile, confirmed the news, stating that the singer had been battling a short illness and was thought to be recovering. However, her condition took a sudden turn for the worse, leading to her untimely death.
With a music career spanning over four decades, Khumalo left an indelible mark on the South African music industry. She was best known for her hit song “Live My Life” and collaborated with prominent artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.
Khumalo’s legacy extends beyond her music, with appearances in popular South African TV series. She is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo who has followed in her footsteps in the entertainment industry and son, Thabo Khumalo.
Fans and fellow celebrities have taken to social media to pay tribute to the music icon, expressing shock and sadness at her passing. Kalawa Jazmee Records, Khumalo’s record label, described her as a “true icon” who inspired many with her talent and dedication to her craft.
