Since they reunited last year after a long break up, and dropped a number of hit songs, including AK 47 and Bronya, expectations have been high for Wutah to release more chart topping songs but that does not seem to be the case.
Wutah, made up of Wutah Kobby and Wutah Afriyie, won the Best Group of the Year at this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA).
After Bronya, Wutah released two songs, Don’t Worry and I Do, which didn’t make any impact and while people may have been expecting follow up work, the two seem to be busy promoting their solo projects.
Just last week, Wutah Kobby was actively promoting his new social media pages as well as his songs.
This has obviously raised some questions that another break up has happened. When Showbiz contacted Wutah Kobby about the perceived break up, he was reluctant to comment.
“There is nothing to say at the moment. I’m just dropping new brand photos on my Instagram and Facebook pages,” he told Showbiz on Monday.
Afriyie, however, addressed the issue in a chat with Showbiz on Tuesday, saying there was no need for people to think of a separation because they are pursuing their solo projects.
“The trend has changed now and the fact that we are a group doesn’t mean we can’t pursue our solo projects. What we are doing is nothing new because the likes of Morgan Heritage are doing that.
“As a group, Gramps and Peter Heritage still record their individual songs and get back together to work as a group.
“Even in Ghana, we can mention the likes of R2Bees who have been doing their individual songs and yet release songs as a group. That is the new trend so I don’t think it is out of place if Wutah takes that path,” he said.
At a time when competition in the music industry has become keener, Showbiz asked Afriyie if it isn’t suicidal for them to release their own songs when they are yet to drop another hit song to sustain their relevance.
“It is not as if nothing isn’t going on. We have stuff coming up. We just went on holidays and are back. Moreover, we have an upcoming tour with Kojo Antwi in the coming days and a lot of gigs as well,” he stated.
Wutah came into the limelight when they came second to Praye during the maiden edition of the Nescafe Africa Revelation (NAR) music competition over a decade ago.
Their debut album, Anamontuo, which had songs such as Adonko, Goosie Gander and Big Dreams, earned them an unprecedented 11 Ghana Music Awards nominations, including The Most Popular Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Best Male Vocal Performance, Hiplife Song of the Year, among others.
