President John Mahama delighted guests at the Chinese Lantern Festival Gala in Accra as he sampled a traditional Chinese delicacy—sweet glutinous rice balls—symbolising family unity and prosperity.

The festival, which marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations, brought together Ghanaian and Chinese dignitaries, business leaders, and cultural performers to celebrate six decades of diplomatic ties.

As the evening unfolded, President Mahama praised the deepening cultural exchange between the two nations, noting that food remains one of the most powerful symbols of unity.

“I had the pleasure of tasting the famous glutinous rice balls tonight, and they remind me so much of our own Ghanaian traditions,” he said. “Food connects us in ways that transcend borders, and just like in Ghana, sharing a meal in Chinese culture is a sign of togetherness and community,” he stated on Sunday, February 9.

The president’s enjoyment of the dish at the University of Ghana stadium in Accra quickly became a highlight of the evening, drawing applause from the audience. Many saw it as a testament to Ghana’s openness to cultural diversity and the importance of embracing traditions beyond its own.

Beyond the culinary experience, President Mahama used the occasion to reaffirm Ghana’s strong partnership with China, highlighting years of cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and education. He commended the Chinese community in Ghana for their contributions to the country’s economy and called for even greater collaboration in the years ahead.

As the night drew to a close, lanterns were released into the sky, illustrating shared aspirations for peace, prosperity, and continued friendship between the two nations. But for many in attendance, the simple act of a president savouring a beloved Chinese dish spoke volumes about the power of cultural exchange.
