A young boy named Cornelius Adom is redefining what it means to live with Spina Bifida. Diagnosed at birth with Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele—a severe form of the condition—his journey has been filled with surgeries, struggles, and unwavering resilience.

Speaking with TV3, his medical battle began early, requiring two major surgeries to repair his spine. But the second surgery came with a heavy consequence—Cornelius became paralysed from the chest down. The doctors warned his family that he might lose his memory or be unable to move his legs. Thankfully, his memory remained intact, but he lost all feeling in his lower body, making everyday tasks like using the bathroom a challenge.

Despite these hardships, Cornelius refuses to let his condition define him. “It makes me feel depressed and sad sometimes,” he admits. “But I have my family, and they have vowed to make me feel loved.”

His parents have been his greatest support system, ensuring that he is never left behind. “It’s a shame for anyone to abandon or run away from a child who needs special attention,” his father says. “These children can never be raised by one person alone. It takes a whole family.”

Rather than keep Cornelius hidden from society, his parents fought to give him an education. Today, he is a student at the University Basic School in Cape Coast, where he learns alongside other children. The school’s inclusive approach ensures that students with disabilities receive the support they need. Cornelius is paired with a high-achieving classmate who helps him with writing and exercises. He also has a caregiver who assists him with daily school activities.

His routine includes physiotherapy to strengthen his upper body and a closely monitored diet to help maintain a healthy weight. But what he desires most is independence. “I want to walk. I want to do things on my own. I don’t want to be assisted ever again,” he says with determination.

Spina Bifida is a condition where the spinal cord does not develop properly in the womb, leaving a gap in the spine that affects nerve function. While the exact cause is unknown, factors like low folic acid intake during pregnancy and family history can increase the risk.

Despite his condition, Cornelius dreams big. He aspires to become a musician and hopes to inspire other children with disabilities. “We are not a burden. We are special,” he says proudly.

His story is not just about struggle—it’s about hope, resilience, and the power of an unbreakable spirit. Cornelius Adom is proof that even in the face of adversity, one can rise, dream, and inspire.
