Electricity customers who bypassed their metres by connecting power directly during the period of the technical challenge to keep their lights on have been advised to reverse the illegal connections. Some customers were connected directly to the grid due to their inability to purchase prepaid credits.
Speaking to Journalists in Accra on Monday, October 3, 2022, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG Mr. Mahama Dubik said the company’s task force will resume its exercise to arrest persons who engage in illegal connections immediately the challenge is completely resolved.
For about a week ECG notified its customers of some technical challenges, which affected its prepaid metering systems. As a result, the purchase of electricity credit has been disrupted in parts of the country. Though ECG issued statements to update customers on the issue and that the problem has been resolved there were still queues at customer service and vending centers.
Speaking at a News Conference in Accra, Managing Director of ECG, Mr. Samuel Dubik Mahama says Ninety-five percent of customers can now purchase power as the system is now running efficiently. The company hopes to resolve the areas which still have issues by today, especially some parts in the Ashanti Region.
Meanwhile, checks at some vending points in Tema show clients lined up waiting for the network to be restored.
In compensation for affected customers, Mr. Mahama apologized to customers for the mishap and said they should channel complaints to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission for redress.
“It would be handled on a case by case basis”, and those who have receipts can bring them in for reconciliation”, the ECG MD noted.
