Ghana has seven years to achieve the SDG target of reducing maternal mortality to less than 70 per 100,000 live births. According to the State of the World’s Midwifery report, equitable access to skilled birth attendance during delivery and well-trained midwives working in a fully functional environment could help avert roughly two-thirds of all maternal and newborn deaths. From providing personalised care during pregnancy to guiding women through labour and delivery, midwives help mothers bring new life into the world in a compassionate and safer manner.
In this Special Report on International Midwives Day, our Reporter Antoinette Abbah, highlights the significance of midwives in achieving the SDG’s target.
