11 suspects arrested for illegal mining near Bunsu

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has arrested eleven individuals for illegal mining activities at Fische near Bunsu.

The suspects, comprising nine Ghanaians and two Burkinabes, were apprehended on April 2, 2025, following a complaint received about their involvement in illegal mining operations.

According to an official police statement, the arrested individuals include Kwaku Owusu (42), Philip Tetteh (52), Abdul Raham (27), Philip Duvor (40), Joseph Asare (32), Charles Manu (35), Joseph Araboga (32), Daniel Bangah (20), Amoaho Isaac (25) (all Ghanaians), as well as Jey Done (40) and Adomah Bouba (25), both Burkinabes.

Authorities also impounded an excavator that was being used in the illegal activities. The police confirmed that all suspects are in custody and are being processed to face justice in the law court in the coming days as investigations continue.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Foster Owusu, the Staff Officer for the Eastern South Regional Police Command, reassured the public of the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stating: “We remain resolute in fighting crime and ensuring that illegal activities such as these are curtailed.”

He further urged the public to report any suspicious mining activities to help curb the growing threat of illegal mining in the region.

Illegal mining, commonly referred to as ‘galamsey’, has been a persistent issue in Ghana, leading to severe environmental degradation and water pollution. The government, alongside law enforcement agencies, have intensified efforts to combat these illegal operations, imposing stricter measures and conducting regular crackdowns.
