A two-vehicle collision involving a water tanker and a commercial passenger vehicle occurred on Tuesday, January 28, at 37 Waterworks Area near the Jubilee House in Accra, sparking fresh calls from pedestrians and eyewitnesses for city authorities to address the non-functional traffic light on the road.
The accident, which involved a commercial vehicle traveling from Aflao in the Volta Region to Accra, has been attributed to the malfunctioning traffic light, according to several eyewitness accounts.
In an interview, residents and bystanders expressed frustration, revealing that the traffic light at the intersection has been out of service for over three years. They claimed its dysfunction has led to frequent accidents, making the area a hotspot for road crashes.
“This is not the first accident here, and it won’t be the last if nothing is done about the traffic light. We have been complaining for years, but no action has been taken,” said an eyewitness.
Another witness emphasised the dangers posed to both motorists and pedestrians. “Crossing this road has become a gamble with your life. We can’t keep risking lives like this. The authorities must fix it immediately,” she urged.
According to locals, the absence of a functioning traffic light creates confusion for drivers and makes it nearly impossible for pedestrians to cross safely, especially during peak hours.
They are calling on the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the relevant road and transport authorities to prioritise the repair of the traffic light before more lives are lost.
The latest accident, though resulting in minor injuries, is seen as another reminder of the urgent need to address road safety concerns in the city.
