The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to preserving the Achimota Forest, describing it as the only remaining greenbelt in Accra. He also announced a critical review of Executive Instrument (EI) 144 and Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which previously declassified parts of the forest and other reserves across the country.

During a working visit to the Forestry Commission in Accra, Mr. Buah emphasized the ecological and cultural importance of the Achimota Forest and pledged to protect it for future generations.

“The Achimota Forest will remain a forest,” the Minister declared. “It’s the only forest reserve in Accra, and we must protect it for future generations.”

The controversial declassification of the forest in 2022 sparked nationwide public outcry and environmental advocacy, prompting renewed calls for its protection.

Mr. Buah noted that the Forestry Commission plays a pivotal role in Ghana’s environmental sustainability, stressing the need to reset and reform the institution to meet modern standards.

“There is no Ghana without the Forestry Commission,” he said. “This reset is not about witch-hunting—Ghanaians voted overwhelmingly for change, and that change is happening.”

Beyond the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), the Minister said his mandate includes safeguarding forest reserves, modernizing forest governance, and ensuring sustainable resource management.

As part of planned reforms, Mr. Buah proposed establishing a commercial wing within the Forestry Commission to enable it to generate revenue while fulfilling its core environmental mandate.

The Acting Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Dr. Hugh Brown, welcomed the Minister’s visit and praised his clear vision and leadership.

“Hon. Minister, your vision is clear and results-oriented. We are ready to work with you to achieve it,” Dr. Brown said.

The visit signals a renewed focus on forest protection and environmental governance under the new administration, with the Achimota Forest standing as a symbolic pillar of the government’s green agenda.
