Government has allocated about ¢220 million to support the relief phase for the communities affected by the Akosombo spillage as well as floods upstream in the Oti, Savannah, and Bono-East region.
This came to light when Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta presented government’s 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament.
The support follows the devastating impact caused by the Akosombo dam spillage following excessive rain recorded in parts of Ghana.
Empathising with families affected and displaced by the spillage, Ken Ofori-Atta indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture will also allocate additional resources to support the restoration of livelihoods.
He conveyed government’s gratitude to all individuals and groups who have supported affected families.
International support
Meanwhile, Ghana has requested funding from the World Bank to support the resettlement of the flood victims.
The funding, under the IDA Crisis Response Window (CRW), is to compensate and reconstruct infrastructure, among other things, in the affected communities.
According to the Finance Minister, Ghana has at the same time applied for financial resources to support the affected flood communities.
“The Ministry has applied to the Global Shield Against Climate Risk Fund, an initiative launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Chancellor Olaf Scholz during the COP 27 in Sham El-Sheikh, to access some financial resources to support communities upstream and downstream of the Akosombo Dam,” Ken Ofori-Atta maintained on Wednesday, November 15.
