Chamber of Aquaculture Hosts Event to Empower Women in the Industry

The Chamber of Aquaculture successfully hosted the Women in Aquaculture event on March 7, 2025, at Central Hotel, Ridge, bringing together industry stakeholders, professionals, and policymakers to celebrate and promote the contributions of women in aquaculture.

Held under the theme “Connecting the Changemakers: Fostering Collaboration Among Women in Aquaculture,” the event highlighted the crucial role of women in advancing sustainable aquaculture and the importance of networking, knowledge-sharing, and policy support to drive the sector forward.

The event was hosted by Mr. Jacob Doe Adzikah, CEO of the Chamber of Aquaculture, and featured a distinguished lineup of speakers, including Dr. Lawrence Ahiah, Director of Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture at the Fisheries Commission, who represented the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and many other industry stakeholders. Their discussions emphasized the need for greater investment in female-led initiatives and the benefits of collaboration in tackling industry challenges.

Also present was Madam Patricia Safo, Founder of Crystal Lake who was the Chairperson of the event, who underscored the importance of empowering women in aquaculture through access to funding, leadership training, and capacity building. She urged stakeholders to work together in creating an environment where women can thrive in the industry. “We believe aquaculture can provide employment for the youth” she said.

Madam Mabel Quarshie, CEO of Aquatic Foods Limited and other Industrial Researchers, emphasized the significance of research and innovation in improving aquaculture practices. She encouraged young women to take up roles in aquaculture, noting that scientific advancements and technology-driven solutions could help enhance productivity and sustainability.

A special message came from the chamber of Aquaculture Board, Mr Wisdom Abodakpi and the CEO of Cycle Farms who also represented the board in delivering an address. In hid speech, he praised the resilience, dedication, and achievements of women in aquaculture, recognizing their role in driving growth and sustainability in the industry. “Women are set as leaders, researchers, innovators, graduates, and advocates, driving the industry, growth, and sustainability. The empowerment of women in the aquaculture industry does not only enhance their personal and professional lives, but also strengthening the entire sector, fostering resilience and learning successes, despite their push-up of division, practitioners in the sector who have faced numerous barriers that hinder them from announcing their full potential.” he stated. He reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to supporting women through mentorship programs, training opportunities, and policy advocacy.

The event featured panel discussions, networking sessions, and interactive workshops, all aimed at fostering collaboration and strengthening the participation of women in aquaculture. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with experts, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities for growth in the sector.

The Women in Aquaculture event reaffirmed the Chamber of Aquaculture’s commitment to supporting and empowering women in the industry. As aquaculture continues to grow as a key sector in Ghana’s economy, such initiatives play a vital role in promoting inclusivity, innovation, and long-term sustainability.
