The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has inaugurated a 23-member Inter-Agency Data Pricing Committee to develop a comprehensive roadmap to lower data costs in Ghana.

The committee comprises representatives from various stakeholders in the digital sector and is tasked with finalizing its report by March 6, 2025.

The goal is to evaluate existing pricing models and recommend strategies for more competitive and affordable data services that promote digital inclusion, economic growth, and national development.

The Communications Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency in data pricing and bridging the digital divide.

“My fidelity is first and foremost to the Ghanaian people before any other consideration,” he stated. He clarified that the committee’s purpose is not merely to justify current data prices but to facilitate a broader discussion on pricing strategies.

He noted that in January 2024, a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) proposed a 10 percent reduction in data prices to the National Communication Authority, but the Ministry did not respond at that time. “For one year, that offer has been pending,” he remarked, underscoring the need for a comprehensive review of all bundle offerings across networks rather than isolated proposals.

George highlighted the potential benefits of affordable data for young Ghanaians seeking gig opportunities abroad.

“If given cheaper, affordable data, many young Ghanaians could work and take gig jobs outside the shores of the country,” he said.

The Chief Executive of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Ken Ashigbey, welcomed the initiative as a vital step towards ensuring value for money in data pricing. He acknowledged the complexity of factors influencing data costs and pledged collaboration with the committee to meet its objectives.

President of the National Union of Ghana Students, Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, expressed gratitude for including student representation on the committee. He pointed out that many students struggle with high data costs during online learning and research activities, expressing hope for fairer pricing outcomes.

The establishment of this Committee marks a significant step toward addressing the pressing issue of data affordability in Ghana.
