ECOWAS Commission President confers with President Mahama on future of organisation

The withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali from ECOWAS, as well as the contingency plan currently being implemented, preparations for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS centered discussions when the President of the ECOWAS commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray met with Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The two leaders also discussed the main challenges and prospects of ECOWAS. Other areas of interest were the organisation of a special summit on the future of the region.

The President of the Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, also congratulated President Mahama on his victory in the last presidential election in Ghana and reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to supporting Member States in strengthening governance, economic integration and security,

President John Mahama, reaffirmed Ghana’s full support for ECOWAS and encouraged the continuation of dialogue with the 3 AES  ( Alliance des États du Sahel) countries to promote regional peace and stability.

President Mahama also pledged his support for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS and the impending Summit of the Future.

He emphasised on the need to reposition ECOWAS in the face of current geopolitical realities and global challenges.
