Engineers across the country have been called upon to harness the potentials of artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies to drive sustainable development. This clarion call was made at the Branch 6, maiden conference and annual general meeting (AGM) of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE), at Ho in the Volta region.
The event, which attracted engineering professionals from diverse fields, was themed “Responsible Engineering for Sustainability in a World of Emerging Technologies.”
The theme for the event sought to inspire engineers to adopt innovation in tackling global and local challenges like climate change, infrastructure deficits, and energy needs, while emphasizing ethical, sustainable solutions.
The Chairman of Branch 6 of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Engineer Antoinette Ama Agboado, emphasized the transformative power of AI and its application across various engineering disciplines and urged engineers to position themselves at the forefront of innovation if they are to effectively tackle the global challenges posed by climate change, infrastructure, and energy needs.
“Currently in the volta region there are no job opportunities for the engineering practitioners and it is a worrying concern . Let us embrace our knowledge of going into technologies just to enhance both national and individual economic empowerment”, she said.
A director at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, Joseph Bayong Marfu, commended the engineers for their contributions to the nation’s development and encouraged them to embrace emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and renewable energy systems.
“The world stands at the intersection of rapid technological advancement and urgent development challenges and the roles of engineers have never been more crucial. And that is why the theme for the meeting Responsible Engineering for Sustainability in a World of Emerging Technologies can never be more appropriate”, Mr Bayong Marfu said.
He also stressed the importance of collaboration between government, private sector, and engineering professionals to create a robust technological ecosystem that drives national progress
The conference featured panel discussions on topics such as AI in engineering, sustainable infrastructure, and the role of engineers in mitigating climate change.
Participants expressed their commitment to incorporating advanced technologies into their work to ensure that Ghana remains competitive in the global landscape.
