Fire in Parliament: MPs run for cover, impacting public business

The fire outbreak in Parliament has caused fear and panic among staff, forcing the Assurance Committee of the House to discontinue its public hearing.

Briefing the media, the Greater Accra Regional Officer ACFO 1, Roberta Agrey Ghanson, has confirmed the fire outbreak from the Member’s Centre on the first floor of Job 600, but she was quick to add that the “situation was under control for now,” but nobody is allowed to go in until further notice.

The fire started at about 9:45 from one of the rooms, prompting the internal Fire Personnel to move in but later called for reinforcement from the Regional and the National offices for support.

At the time of filling this report, three fire tenders were on the scene, with about five water tankers relying on Parliament hydrants.

The Chief Fire Officer of Ghana National Fire Service, Julius Kuunui, who came in to assist his men, assured the public of no cause for alarm because “we’ve managed the situation for now”.

He never confirmed the source of the fire but mentioned that fire can’t be predicted, “so users of the facility must be prepared for some of these things.

The incident has forced the Assurance Committee of Parliament to discontinue its public hearing and adjourned sitting to 3 pm, the chairman of the Committee and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told Journalists in Parliament at the fire scene.
