Five Arrested for Illegal Mining on River Fum in Assin North

The Central North Police Regional Command’s Anti- Galamsey Taskforce has arrested five suspects involved in illegal mining activities on river Fum at Assin Ayitey, a farming community near Assin Akonfudi in the Assin North Constituency on April 7, 2025. The suspects include two Ghanaians and three Chinese nationals. 

The Ghanaian suspects have been identified as Duut Kwabena Sakakba, aged 38 and Douglas Nyamekye, aged 36. The Chinese nationals also include Ma Jian, aged 37, Ma Young, aged 31 and Ma Haibi, aged 54. They are currently in Police custody being processed to be put before the law court to face justice.

According to the release, two (02) Excavators with chassis numbers SY 6HK1-XABEA-01-C3 and SWE365E00762 used by the miners were found on the site. The operators of the Excavators fled with the ignition keys”, the statement read. 

The police however said efforts are underway to get the Excavators to a holding place. 

The police noted that the owners of the Excavators would be traced to face justice as well.

Additionally, a Toyota Hilux pick up with registration number GE 2743-13, was also found at the site and has been confiscated by Police.
