Day in and day out, the conversations surrounding climate change and environmental conservation keep diversifying around the world with citizens of various nations adopting measures to stop environmental pollution. The situation remains different in Ghana in the fight against illegal mining locally called galamsey.
In recent development, calls have been made for direct prosecutions of perpetrators of the illegal acts destroying vegetation and water bodies in the country.
In reaction to such reports, a Clinical Psychologist, Professor Daniel Bruce has expressed concerns and has called for a life jail term for people caught in such illegal mining acts.
“I am in support of…even the jail term is too less, they must be jailed for life”, Professor Daniel Bruce made this statement on GTV’s Breakfast Show on October 3, 2023.
According to him, galamsey operators are anti-social in terms of personality and when dealing with people who have antisocial tendencies, it is important to take precautions in order to avert any possible harm they pose to the society.
Prof. Bruce further explained that individuals engaging in illegal mining have a tendency to destroy anything in their path in pursuit of Gold.
He went on to state that if radical measures and actions are not taken, the destruction will only continue.
